Back in Sydney

Well we are back in the big smoke (Sydney) have been for a couple of weeks been very busy unpacking and back at work for now. Our next trip will be in a couple of years now to WA so we have to do some serious saving till then.

31st September Mataranka – Barkly Homestead NT

Another early start as we have a long day today. We got away 7:30am
First stop Daly Water Hotel at 9:30am to have a look and some of us had a pie which they were really good. We were there for about 1hr just looking around as it was a very unusual place.
Not a lot in between places out here so a boring drive.

Stopped just north of Elliot for a toilet break and walk around the car.
At 1:00pm pulled up on the side of the road at Renner Springs for lunch.
We arrived at Three Ways at 2:45pm where Chris and Mary will leave us as they are going to Alice for a few days and then they will make there way home in a couple of weeks.
Everyone got some fuel as it is another 187ks to Barkly Homestead.
As it was so boring on this road we played eye spy between cars to fill in time.
That night we went to the pub for a $12 roast lamb dinner.

30th August Kununurra -Mataranka NT

Very early start today as we loose 1 ½ hrs going over the boarder.
This is the start of the long drives home.
We had a stop at Timber Creek for morning tea.
Then at Katherine at 2;00pm for lunch. Quick stop into woolworths for extra supplies before heading on.

Arrived at Mataranka 3:30pm and met up with Carl who had his car fix today.
There were lots of bats in the trees but the pool was nice so in for a swim.
Getting darker later on this side of the boarder.

Paul's B/day today.
This morning the boys got themselves ready by 6:00am to meet some guy out the front of the caravan park to go fishing. When the guy arrived he had to cancel as he had a death in the family.
Carl decided to leave early so he was gone by 6:00am and Ron and Jen were on there way by 7:00am. Now that only left 6 vehicles behind.

Pam was not well this morning been up most of the night.
Some of us went shopping at 8:30am to get some last minute things to take home. Meeting the boys in town at 10:00am but they did not listen and had to ring them to see where they were.
We set out to zebra rock to see what was there and it was very interesting. Had a drink and looked around the place for awhile some fed the fish.
Then out to the fruit loop first place was the salad bowl which we all had a mango ice cream which was extremely good.
Went to the distillery to have a look not much there.
On our way back to camp went to Mina Mirra National Park it was very hot but went for a short walk anyway.
Back tot camp for a cool off in the pool. The temp was 42 today.
That night we had fish and chips supposed to Barrimundi not sure though.

28th August Kununurra

Lake Argyle

This morning we had and easy morning as we had to be down town to pay for our cruise at 9:00am and after that we had free time until 11:00am so everyone did there own thing until then.
We all met up and went out to Lake Argyle for lunch and a look around. We sat in a really nice park to have our lunch. We made our way back to camp about 1:15pm.

Once back at camp everyone got ready to be picked up at 3:30pm.
We were all on the bus waiting for Roger who had decided to go to the bottle shop at the last minute and the bus waited for about 10 minutes.
We were on the cruise about 4:00pm which was really good and it was only us on the boat which was even better. The meal was very nice and lots of it.

27th August Elquestro – Kununurra

Most of us left early to walk Emma Gorge. Jen, Toby and Ron, Roger & Jill met us there as they did not want to do the walk. It was about a 1hr walk and very pretty and the swimming hole at the end was a bit cool but very nice. We got back from our walk about 10:00am and they were around the pool so we went in to cool off from the walk back.

Jack, Pam, Paul and I decided to go straight to Wyndham and the others took a scenic drive around the range which they really enjoyed. When we arrived in Wyndham we went to the lookout to see the five rivers which was amazing. We had baramundi and chips for lunch at the local cafe which was very good. After that we drove around to the port to have a look and to the croc farm but the tour only runs at 11:00am so we had missed it.

On our way out of Wyndham we passed the others going in so we kept going to Kununurra.
We arrived at Kununurra about 3:30pm and set up camp before the others arrived.
Pam and I went down town to find out a few things for the group.
When got back everyone was having happy hour so we filled them in and gave them maps of the town and other things to see.
Had an easy tea as it was very hot to cook.

26th August Elquestro

6 of us woke up really early to start the elquestro gorge walk by 6:30 as it was a 4-5hrs walk. It was not a hard walk very scenic and lots of things to see along the way. When we finally got to the end of the gorge after scrambling over rocks to find a beautiful pool with a waterfall just the thing to have a swim as it was getting very hot. We got back to the car about 10:30. We decided to go to the gorge were the others were (moonshine gorge) and when we did find them we went had a swim in the pool they were swimming and the boys started on the walk around the gorge. After a quick dip the I took the girls back to Elquestro and we went and had lunch at the shop and waited for the boys to get back.

When the boys got back we went for a drive to some lookouts and 4x4 wheel drive tracks. Back to camp as we were going to the restraint at 6:00pm for dinner which was very nice.
Ian McKinaly received the shackle tonight for sleeping in his chair.

25th August Home Valley – Elquestro

We had a swim in the pool before the others arrived up from the rive camp.

.We left the resort at 8:30am and drove to Zebedee springs on the Elquestro station and it a very nice place to have a dip. We were there for about 1hr and then on to the resort. We all booked in and the girl gave us an overview of the place.
After we set up camp we decided to go on a cruise.
So we drove down to the gorge for 2:30 cruising time. Once on the boat it was very good. The boat made its way up the gorge and it was very interesting. At the end of the gorge they stopped the boat and we saw Archer fish, cat fish and Barrumbundi.
After the cruise we went up to the bar for happy hr and it was nice and relaxing.

24th August Mitchell Falls – Home Valley

As the trailers were a bit slower going in we left early from camp so off we set at 6:50am.
The Simpson's and the Bleazard's had a flat battery.
We stopped half way again and the others caught us up and we let them go ahead.
We arrived at King Edward river at 9:00am for a swim, as we pulled into there our engine light came on again so Paul had to drain some fuel from the filter and it seem to be ok for a while. We left King Edward and on to the main track and the light came on again so they drained the fuel again and that seem to fix it.
We all stopped in at Drysdale at 11:15am to fuel up and water and we were out of there in 1/2hr.
Lunch was at the turn off to the Gibb River Rd.

At 1:15pm we stopped in at Elembrae Station for scones and jam and they were delicious.
The scenery was great coming into Home Valley and the caravan park was amazing.
Some of us stayed up in the park and the other went down to the river to camp where the salt water croc's were.
No shackle awarded tonight.

23rd August Mitchell Falls

Well what a big day we are going to have up early as we had a briefing for the helicopter at 6:00am and we wanted to start the walk into Mitchel falls at 6:30am so it would not be too hot. 8 of us did leave at that time and we took 4hrs to make it to the falls and that was with a few swims in all the water holes on the way. The walk was easy and we enjoyed it immensely.
Once we were at the falls we walked a bit further to get the best view and we had a lot of time before we were being flow out. Some of them left at 1:30pm. Our flight was at 2:30pm so we
floated around in the water above the falls for a few hrs.
Jack and Pam received the shackle tonight as they kept forgetting to take the toilet paper to the loo.

22nd August King Edward River – Mitchell Falls

This morning it we were not in a rush to leave as we did not have far to go. Left camp around 8:30am. The road was a bit rough and we had to take it easy. Ron still in the lead and Jack tail end.
We did stop at 10:15am at a lookout which was half way to let the shocks cool down.
When we did arrive at the camp 11:30am it was very dusty and very hot. There was not a lot of shade in this park.

After lunch we went and found a swimming hole which was a 800m walk from camp and very hot so we really enjoyed when we did find it.
We spent a couple of hrs there as it was too hot to walk back.
Had a easy tea as it was too hot to cook.
I received the shackle tonight because when I walked over to get some water a guy in a Pajero gave me a lift back to my camper.

21st August Kalumburu – King Edward River

Everyone made there way into town so we could be on our way by 10:30am.
Ron in lead and little Ian tail end.
We got back to Mitchell falls turn off about 12:30 as we traveled a bit slower going back as the road seemed rougher.

We then headed into the Mitchell falls road as King Edward river camp ground was about 8ks in on this road.
Once there the swimming hole was great and quickly set up camp so we could get into the water as it was very hot and there were no croc's we could see here.
Carl was awarded the shackle tonight as when he tried to get a dunny that morning he had a lot of trouble as they were all full and he seemed to miss out even while waiting outside them.

20th August Drysdale – Kalumauru

We were on the road at 7:30am as we were not sure of the road conditions and how long it would take us to get there. The morning was nice and cool which was a good change.
We are in the lead Jack tail end.
As it turned out the road was not too bad and we made good time. At 9:30 we stopped for a break at the turn off to Mitchell falls and we all had something to eat.

Drysdale River

Once everyone was ready off we went again. Arrived at Kalumburu about 11:30am and we had to get permits and everyone had an ice cream before we made our way out to McGowan's Island. We set up camp and a few of the group went and had a look on the beach to see if they could see any salt water croc's.
The boys tried to organize a fishing trip but no luck.
We all sat around Roger and Jill's camper to do he shackle and Colleen received it tonight.

19th August Mt Barnett – Drysdale Station

Paul and I packed up the camper early so we could have a swim in the pool at 7:15am before we left which was really nice.
Everyone was to meet at the road house by 9:00am to get on the road
Ian in the lead and we are tail end.

Arrived at Barnett River Gorge around 10:00am found a great swimming hole to cool off in and saw a lot of flying foxes in the trees.
On the road again by 11:30 stopped for lunch on the way.

Arrived Drysdale at around 2:30pm everyone got fuel and all booked into the camping area. As soon as we were set up I raced over to do some washing as it was very hot and I did not think it would take long to dry.

Did some socializing in the afternoon as we were going out for dinner to the homestead.
We had a lovely dinner with great company.
Pam got the shackle tonight at the restaurant because Jack had to ferry her clothes from one part of the swimming hole to the other as she did not want to walk back.

18th August Mornington – Mt Barnett

On the road at 7:30am as we had a full day to day.
Roger in lead and Chris at tail end. Once in order we set off on another day of great scenery, back through the Mornington Wilderness road then back on the Gibb river road.
We traveled about 19ks to Adcock river and departed our cars for the short walk into it which was really nice.

Once we had a look back in the car and on to Galvans Gorge which was another short walk but well worth it as it was a great place to swim and cool off.

It was then only 13ks to Mt Barnett where we are staying the night.
Arrived there around 1:00pm and once the tents and campers were set up we went for a walk to the gorge which took about 40 minutes to get to it to the swimming hole so once we were all there all in the water for a quick dip to cool before walking back to camp. We had an easy tea as it was very hot.

17th August Mornington day 2

Jenny and Ron had to go back to Derby today so they set off about 7:00am

We left camp about 7:30am to make our way to Sir John Gorge. Once there we went for a walk to see the site and they boys walked for about 1 1/2hrs dragging us over rocks through sand patches looking for a good swimming hole but not to be found. Made our way back which took just as long and it was extremely hot so we were a bit exchanged by the end of the walk.

On our way back to camp we stopped off at Bluebush Wetlands but everyone was to tired to walk so we made our way to Bluebush for a swim and some lunch which was very nice and the water was great.
In the afternoon everyone packed a few things as we have to move on tomorrow.
Ian McKinley and Rhonda went and had a few drinks down at the bar waiting for Jenny to ring and they did not return.
At 5:30pm everyone else made there way down to have dinner which was really nice and it was a great night to a perfect 2 full days in Mornington Wilderness Camp.
Ian McKinley received the shackle tonight for leaving his towels everywhere even on his car bull bar.
Before heading off to bed everyone had a night cap and a chat.

16th August Mornington day 1

Bustard

Well today we are doing the trip report so I have to keep a record of all the good things that happen during the day.
We start the day leaving camp at 7:30 as we have a full day. First stop was the office to collect life jackets and paddles to row the canoes.

On the way to Diamond Gorge we crossed several water crossings. It took us about 1hr to get to Diamond Gorge as we stopped and looked at things on the way.
When we did arrive at the gorge we had to scramble over rocks to get to the canoes.
Once we were in the gorge it was spectacular. The sheer sides on both sides of the gorge. The colour in the rocks was just something to see. And the only way you can see this gorge is by canoe.
We paddled about 2ks down and on the way back it was so hot everyone had to beach the canoes and have a swim to cool off before we made our way back to the cars.
We stopped at a lookout on the way back to camp and then Cajeput gorge which was very nice and yet again had another swim.
Once back at camp we sat around and relaxed as everyone was a bit tired from paddling and the sun.
Tonight little Ian got the shackle for backing over a small tree and knocking it out of the ground.

15th August Silent Grove – Mornington Wilderness Camp

Left Silent Grove and headed out to Bell Gorge at 7:30am. We made it down to the Gorge and it was just beautiful and well worth the walk and climb down.

We got back to the car at about 10:15am and had some morning tea before heading off.
Arrived at Imintji Store on the Gibb river road at 11:00am and we all had something there to break up the trip. Ron tried to get some new tyres but no luck.

Arrived at mornington turnoff at about 12:00 and radioed ahead to let them know we were coming all OK.

It took about 1 1/2hrs to get into the Wilderness Camp and once in we went to the office check in and organized a canoe trip for the next day.
In to set up camp and have a relaxing afternoon some did washing and some did nothing.

But it was nice to just sit and enjoy the sites around and take in the Kimberli es now that we are half way through the trip.

14th August Derby – Silent Grove

Another early start out of the caravan by 8:00am and all up to the wharf to take photos of all the cars lined up along the wharf. Today Roger leads and Ian McKinley tail end Charlie.

Ron's tyre which was his second for the trip.

Stopped for an ice cream along the way at an old caravan off the Gibb River. Arrived Lennard Gorge about 12:00 had a bite to eat before making our way down to the water. It was a long way down so only some of us made it and had a swim while they were there.
By the time we walked back to the car it was 2:00pm and we had to get to Silent Grove so off we went and arrived about 4:00pm to set up and have a few drinks before tea. Very hot today and no clouds.

13th August Windjana Gorge – Derby

We got up early again today I just can't get used to the time difference over here. We had a walk to the gorge before we set off for Derby.

We arrived in Derby at 10:30am which was good as I did some washing and we all did some maintenance on cars and fixing up campers and getting supplies for the next few days.
We did some site seeing around Derby.

For dinner we had fish and chips down by the wharf watching they sun going down.
Ron got the shackle award tonight for leaving clothing on top of car and driving out of caravan park.

12th August Fitzroy Crossing-Windjana Gorge

We were booked on a cruise down Geike Gorge at 8:30am so we all made our way out to that. Once on the boat it was very hot and there was no shade on the boat. The scenery was fabulous and there was a lot of croc's on the side of the banks. Once again a great tour organized.
I had to have a visit to the local hospital in Fitzroy Crossing as I have been battling a kidney infection and have had a pain in my back for a few days. So they were very good and gave me some antibiotics so hopefully I will be ok now.

Chris and Mary had to leave us and go into Derby to get there fridge fixed as it stopped working the day before.
We set off the Tunnel Creek which was the most amazing thing to see. We all walked through and out to the other side.

Next on the list was Windjana Gorge where we stayed for the night. I got dinner early but Paul and Ian decided to disappear for awhile and now one new where they were. When they came back they had been watching a show put on by the tour bus that had pulled into camp and the cook was going
to wrestle the croc's in the water with a knife.
Had an early tea this time in the light of the day which was great.
The shackle went to me tonight for leaving keys and phone in the camper when we folded all up and packed it away.

11th August Bungles Bungles – Fitzroy Crossing

We were the first to leave camp today 6:00am as we wanted to get into Halls Creek early so it took us 1 1/2hrs to get out of the bungles. On the way out we saw a beautiful dingo sitting on the road and he was not going to move out of the way for us. We also had some water crossings.

Pulled into Leycesters rest to put air in the tyres as we were going to be on tar for 100ks. We then made our way into Halls Creek once again to get fuel. When we arrived the que for fuel was out onto the street and we waited about 1/2hr to get it. We filled up on some supplies and sat around while everyone was ready as it was very hot.
Now we are off to Fitzroy Crossing about 240ks so we traveled for a few hours this time on tar.
When we arrived we went straight to the caravan park to set up. Some went for a swim and others did some washing and general tidy up of vehicles. Paul discovered that the trailer has thrown a shoe so he took them off until we get to Derby.
This time Paul got the shackle tonight.

10th August Bungles Bungles

This morning we had an early helicopter flight at 8:30am so off we set to get to the heliport at 7:30am. Once on the helicopter the scenery was awesome and the pilot was gorgeous. We had a 1/2hr flight and was well worth it thanks kids for my birthday present.

We have a mascot now and he is Corrie the crocodile on our trip with us now. We drove to and walked to Echidna chasm, Osmond range lookout, Mini Palms walk which they were just fantastic and well worth the walking. I think this holiday is a fitness one.
We had lunch in one of the picnic areas and the weather was really hot about 38deg C.
After we all had a shower we went and watched the sunset over the rocks before we went back to camp and had dinner. Carl got the shackle again today.

9th August Old Halls Creek – Bungles Bungles

We were the first to leave camp 7:00am. We went into Halls Creek and the car seems to be ok today, we all fueled up in Halls Creek and put air in our tyres as we will be on tar for 100ks or so. On the way we saw a dingo trying to pull a dead kangaroo off the road. We stopped on the way at Leycesters rest road side stop to let our tyres down to get back on dirt road and we had morning tea there while we were waiting.
We were the leaders today and traveled 1 1/2 hrs into the national park before we got into the visitors center so we could get a national park pass and pay for camping 2 nights. On the way we went through a few water crossing much to everyones delight.
After setting up camp we went for a walk to the Domes walk and Cathedral Gorge, and look out which filled in the afternoon.
That night while sitting around the camp fire we decided to had a broken shackle award and our first recipent was Carl.

8th August Wolf Creek- Old Halls

Leaving camp 7:30am. Ian Bamforth in the lead today, Ron Tail end.
Carl's car seem to be stuck together with gaffer tape as he loves the stuff.
We have 154ks to Halls Creek and just outside the gate of Wolf Creek it must be out turn to have car trouble as we had the engine light come on and the turbo was not kicking in.
We could not travel very fast so we were holding everyone up.
About 100ks Chris had to take our trailer and we limped into Hall Creek.
They change the air filter and fuel filter and we
will see if that works.

We spent 2hrs working on the car with everyone looking on and Ian and Paul and a few others under the car.
Late that afternoon we went for a drive out from Old Halls Creek found a lovely billabong. Then back to camp.

7th August Rabbit Flat – Wolf Creek

We left camp at 8:00am back on the Tanami, Car is the leader for today. We all had to keep a distance from each other because of the dust which just hung around.
About 2hrs after heading off we crossed the WA boarder. Had morning tea just after that on the side of the road.
Look what they do to there cars.
We passed the turn off to Balgo and not long after that we had to stop as Roger had a problem with his car. After about 1hr Ian and Roger found the problem which they worked out was a fuse.

When we did get moving no stops until we arrived at Wolf Creek.
Set up camp and then we all had a walk to the creater. Up one side and down the other into the middle where we saw lots of lovely flowers and it was very green in the middle.

6th August Alice – Rabbit Flat

We are finally on our way to the Kimberlies, we left the caravan park at 7:15am which has been our home for 4 days. We waited for the 4x4 guys out of town as we had to meet then at 8:00am and as usual we are early once again.
Tar all the way to Tilmouth and this is the Tanami Desert Road. Stopped off at Tilmouth Well to refuel and morning tea break let down tyres as we will hit dirt 2ks out.

We stopped in at Yuendumu which is an aboriginal community and we all had an ice cream there and then back on the road.
Not far along we had a quick lunch break and while we were having it a whirl wind blew through with all the dust with it.

we got going again it was all the way to rabbit flat. We watched the moon come up.

5th Alice Springs

We packed up as tomorrow we head off on the Tanami Desert for the Kimberlies.
Did the last minute shopping and sat around enjoying the sun shine.

Had the car serviced so we had to walk around Alice shops for 3hrs so not very exciting.
Late afternoon we saw the others from the club arrive in town.
We went and saw them after they had set up as they were saying in a different park to us.

3rd Palm Valley

We set off to Palm Valley today and it was a beautiful day not a cloud in the sky.

Arrived at Finke National park and walked up to a lookout which was great saw all over the valley.

Had to do a bit of rock hopping to get into Palm Valley but once we were there you would think you were in paradise.

Had a walk into the valley and then back to the car. Stopped in at the picnic area for lunch.

Paul wanted to see Boggy hole well it took 11/2hrs to get there to see some water then we had to get out of there again and it was getting quite late.

Once back in Alice we went saw the Ghan train off as it was having its 80th anniversary.

1st August Erldunda – Rainbow Valley

Today we have not got far to go only 145ks so we did not leave until 9:00am. It was a cold morning and it made it hard to put down the tent.
The showers could have been warmer but I did not stay in there long.
On our way to rainbow valley we saw lots of eagles which I would love to get a photo of before the end of the trip.
We arrived at rainbow valley about 11:00am which was a good time as there was only one other car.
We set up tent and then a few others started to arrive.

Check out the view before lunch. We had some prawns from Pt Lincoln left in the freezer so we ate them.
After lunch went for a walk to see the mushroom rock.
Paul had a sleep in the afternoon while I did some knitting to fill in time.
Backed dinner tonight so we put it on early so we could eat while it was still light. Watched a sunset over yet another rock which was very spectacular.

31st Coober Pedy-Erldunda

This morning we were feeling a bit lazy and did not venture out of the caravan park at Coober Pedy until about 9:00am.
We went for a walk around the town and had a look at the opals and girls there was some nice ones at a good price. We purchased some small ones.

We left there about 10:30am and started heading north we only had about 400ks to do today so we were in no rush and the road is very boring as there is still not much to see.
We crossed the S.A boarder into N.T. We called into Kulgera which has grown since we last stayed there a number of years ago and the caravan park has amenities now kids. Once again and we are having the night at the turn off to Ayers Rock in a caravan park there which is quite nice.
We went and had happy hour over at the bar for about 1hr then back to cook tea.

30th Pt Augusta – Coober Pedy

We were on the road by 9:00am as we have 537ks to do today.
During the course of this mornings drive we passed a lot of triple road trains going toward Pt Augusta.
It was a bit cloudy and showers of the rain this morning.
We stopped and took pictures of Island lagoon which had water in it 4 days ago and now nothing.

Then on to Lake Hart to take some photos.

We pulled into a rest area about 1:00pm for lunch and a cuppa.
There is not much to see between Pt Augusta and Coober Pedy very spare land and only a few sheep on the side of the road. A lot of traffic going south no much going north.
We pulled into Coober Pedy about 3:00pm set up camp and went out the breakaways about 30ks out of town to see the sun go down

29th Pt Lincoln – Pt Augusta

After getting another tyre we left Pt Lincoln about 10:15am.

Called it to Tumby Bay to check it out as Paul said it was a good fishing spot.

For a rare change I had to drive as Paul was feeling a bit tired and not often I get to go behind the wheel.

Stopped on the side of the road at 1:00pm between Cowell and Whyalla to have some lunch.
Changed drivers again and drove through Whyalla around 2:00pm.

Arrived in Pt Augusta about 3:30pm and set up camp for the night.

28th Coffin Bay (day trip)

Today we woke up a little earlier than yesterday as Paul had to take the tyre off the trailer and get a new one.

After we did that off to Coffin Bay for the day. It was not far about 42ks from Pt Lincoln. It is a little fishing village and very pretty.

I think we will be returning here at some stage for a week of fishing.

In to the Coffin Bay national park for lunch. We even found a 4x4 track to go on to get to some more good fishing spots. The weather was still a bit showery and cold.
In the afternoon Paul put the tyre back on the camper and I went shopping. Paul found some people in the park to have a chat to while I was away.

27th Pt Lincoln

Well this morning we had a rare sleep in as we have not had one of these in 3 weeks as there has been too much to see.

When we did get up I did some washing and every-time I tried to hang it out it rained as there were showers all day.

About 10:30am we went for a drive around to the marina then to he look-out. It was very windy there nearly blew us away. We then went for a walk around the town and it was very pretty.

After lunch we decided to have a drive into the Lincoln National Park which was very picture's. We tried to see some whales that have been hanging around for a few days but no luck.

26th Woomera – Pt Lincoln

Paul & I woke early as the wind and rain was extremely bad. We pack up and left around 8:30am before the rain set in and trying to get the camper down was quick difficult as the wind was very strong. It took us 1 3/4hrs to get to Pt Augusta. We stopped there for a cuppa just over the bridge where there was a nice park down by the water. It was there that we left Bryan, Kim, Mika & Jason as they were gong on to Adelaide and then home.

Paul & I headed for Pt Lincoln, first port of call was Whyalla which is a steel town and very old but quite nice we dropped into the visitors centre where there was a big ship.

We then went an bout 1hr down the road to Cowell and had some lunch which was now 1:30pm and we were starting to feel a bit pekish. Cowell is about 182ks from Pt Augusta.

Back in the car after we had a quick look around and then on to P Lincoln which is about 2hrs away.
Arrived about 3:30pm and first stop was the visitors centre to see where everything was so we could find the caravan park. It is quick a bit town since we have not seen many shops in 2 weeks.
Set up camp and had stir fry pork for dinner and early to bed as we were a bit tired.

24th Arckaringa Station – William Creek

Well another day has begun and we left the station super early to get the sunrise on the painted desert. We had a cup of tea out there but the wind was blowing a gale and it was very cold. So as soon as the sun was up we were on our way.

The Oodnadatta track was very good and we were making good timing except when we got to box creek 40ks out of William Creek where we rolled a tyre off the trailer and our tyre gadget did not have time to let us know what was happening.

So on went the spare tyre and off we were again.

We got to William Creek in about 41/2 hrs which was really good as we had a flight scheduled for 2:00pm over the Painted Hills and Lake Eyre.
We had a quick bit to eat and off to meet our flight.

When up in the air it was fantastic to see the Painted Hills, but the best was seeing water in Lake Eyre. So our flight was a big success and we all seemed to enjoy it.

We hoped our tyre would be fixed by the time the flight was finished but unfortunately it was not so we decided to stay at William Creek the night as it was too risky to travel on these roads without a spare.
We had a quick dinner then over to the pub for a few drinks and were it was a bit warmer and out of the wind.
During the night we had a bit of rain and I was a bit worried we might be stuck out here.

23rd Dalhousie – Arckaringa Station (Painted desert)

Left 7:50am stopped at Dalhousie ruins and saw date palms, lots of spring mounds road has not improved very much. After Dalhousie we crossed Pedika Desert very rough gibber plain this desert is on the edge of the Simpson..

We went across a lot of sand dues then on to Hamilton Station.

The road improved slightly and took us 2hrs to travel 70ks. Then we stopped near Hamilton station for a cup of tea. Arrived at Oodnadatta at 11:50am had a look at the pink road house for ½ hr. Headed for Arckaringa station for the night. We arrived at 2:10pm then set up camp we went and saw the cattle being taged and there horns being cut off so then some could be sent to James town for fattening.

We then drove back to the Painted Desert for a walk and sat at the look out to watch the sunset.

22nd Old Andado – Dalhousie

Kims Birthday today. We followed the Binns track down and that was a very exciting track lots of bull dust. And track was a bit rough.

Arrived at Mt Dare about 11:00am and had pies and cuppu while we waited for the trailer to be fixed which took about 3hrs. Set of for Dalhousie Springs at 1:30pm and the road was extremely bad and took us over 2hs to travel 70Ks.

Arrived at Dalhousie 3:30pm and set up camp and went straight to the hot springs for a dip then back to camp for a baked dinner and pancakes after tea.

21st Chambers Pillars – Old Andado

Left Chambers at around 7:40 drove back to Maryvale and we passed the grader going out to grade the rest of the road he had started the day before bad luck for us I guess, and then joined the old Ghan Heritage trail stopped at Rodinga siding for a look, continued on to Bundooma Siding and water tower and we had morning tea. Jason noticed that the trailer was not sitting properly which tuned out to be a broken spring.

Passed through some narrow parts of the road which was still the railroad we were following. Continued unto this road until Finke the road was average.

We arrived at Finke about 1:30pm but the petrol station did not open until 2:00pm so we filled in time going to the Lam bert centre about 33Ks out of town.

Quick stop to take photos then back into town to get the fuel.

We are now headed for Old Andado arrived there at 4:45pm had tea and met the caretaker and had a look around Molly's homestead.

20th Ayers Rock – Chambers Pillars

Left Ayers rock at 7:30am on the way out we took some photos of the sun coming up over the Olga's then we got back in the car and drove to Mt Eberneza for a bit to eat and a break, we then headed north to Stuarts Well stopped at the cannonball memorial to have a look and arrived at Stuarts Well at 11:40am for fuel.

Then off to Chambers Pillars along a stock route and the road was really good. We followed a grader most of the way out to Chambers so the road was extreally good until we over took the grader then it was average.
Arrived at Chambers at 3:30 and walked to the Pillar and back to camp for a drink. The day was brilliant and you would not think it was winter out here,

Then back to the Pillar for sunset.

19th Ayers Rock

We woke up very early 5:30am so we could see the sunset.

This morning was very cold had jacket gloves and scarf on which is the coldest morning we have had so far.
We were not alone out at the sunrise as there seem to be people coming from everywhere.
We stayed the about an hour and froze while waiting for the sun do come up on the rock.

Well eventually it did and was a great sunrise.
After that we drop those that wanted to climb the rock and we walked some part around it as I think we are tired from all the other walks we have done over the past few days.

Quite afternoon we had and we were getting ready for the next day out to Chambers Pillars which will be a big day.
Might go out for dinner we are going to check it out.

18th Kings Creek – Ayers Rock

We left really early 7:30am which was really good as we got to Ayers Rock camping area about 10:30am so we put up the campers.
After we had a bit to eat for lunch we headed out to the Olga's for a walk through the Valley of the Winds. Which was really good took about 2½ hrs steep in some places and hard walking in a lot of places.

Back to the campers about 4:30pm and then we got organized to go and see the sunset out at the rock.
Which was a good idea as it was starting to get very crowed and if we were any later we would not have got a good spot. Good idea Wendy.
Back to camp for tea and some more drinks and into bed for another hectic day tomorrow.

17th Kings Canyon

We had a relaxed morning getting up and going as we are going to walk around the top of the canyon.

When we arrived at the car park was fairly empty and did not look a lot of people there as it was 9:00am.

Start the climb up the canyon quite steep and we took it quite slow and steady.

When we arrived at the top it was very breath taking and really amazing that you could be somewhere quite extraordinary out in the middle of Australia.

The view was amazing and we did not walk fast as we wanted to take it all in and enjoy what was out here in the middle of now where.

It will be hard to put pictures in this entry as everything was just so out of this world.
Once we had finished about 3hrs later for took a short walk into the canyon which by then we were a bit dead and wanted something to eat as I think everyone was a bit hungry.
So off to have some lunch at the rest area.

Back to camp looking for some fire wood on the way so we can have a fire tonight. Bryan, Jason, Mika went and had a go on the quad bikes around Kings Creek Station.

Tomorrow is another day and it will just be as pack as today as we are off to the Rock.
We went to a show they had on the property for a couple of hours.

16th July Alice – Kings Creek

We left Alice Springs at about 8:30am
We had to stop in at Hermannsburg for a permit to drive on the Mereenie Loop road.
We stopped in and took a photo of Albert Namatjira House

We drove on a way further to Gosse Bluff and we had morning tea and left there at 11:30am.
We ventured onto the Mereenie Loop road for the 134ks to Kings Creek Station camping area. The road was very bad in spots and the rest of the road was average.

We passed a couple of tourist busses the first lot we have seen for awhile and there was a lot more traffic on this road coming and going.

The corrigations were very bad shook everything around in the car and in the trailer. We stopped in at a lookout after about 2hr leaving Gosse Bluff and had some lunch before back on the road again for the 1/2hr trip to Kings Creek. One in Kings creek we step up the campers and sat around for a drink and nibblies

15th Alice Springs

Another day in Alice so off to the Desert Park early 8:30am as it will take half the day to see as there is a lot of habitat and aboriginal culture to look at and the birds a great to see. So we had a lovely time walking around and saw a very good show with a buzzard, kites, and a few other species they have out here in the outback.

Back to camp for lunch and a break before we venture off somewhere else to see some more things in Alice.
We took a trip to the Telegraph station and spent a bit of time looking around the old homes and all the other things they have there.
Did some shopping as tomorrow we will be off to Kings Canyon and we need to stock up on supplies.

14th July West MacDonnell (day trip)

The first port of call was Serpentine Gorge which was 100ks from Alice.

The walk into the gorge was quite nice and a easy walk then we decided to go up to the lookout which was a bit hard going but spectacular.
Ellery creek was the next and it was pretty good so we had lunch there.

12:30pm left to go to Stanley Chasm, after we got a ticket we went for another walk to the Chasm we spent some time looking around.
The next is Simpson Gap we had a walk in there had a look around for a little while.
Back in the car to head back to Alice stopping off at Flynns Grave.
Tea in camp tonight and it is starting to get really cold.

13th July Old Ambalindum Homestread – Alice Springs

We left 9:00am on our way we stopped at Arltunga hotel and took some photos then we set off to Ross River.
Had a quick stop there and on our way to N'dhala Gorge. We had a walk through the gorge.
Back to the car about 12:00 and back on the Binns trak for a bit more dirt road.

Stopped in at Jessie Gap and Emily Gorge before heading into Alice on tar road.
Arrived in Alice about 1:30pm check into the caravan park set up the camper before we got some lite rain.

Then we set off to get our tyre fix from a puncture on the Plenty Hwy. We went into town to have a quick bite to eat for lunch.
We went up to Anzac hill to have a look over Alice Springs.

Then back to camp to get ready for dinner which we went to the Meno Club.

12th July Ruby Gap

We woke up a little late today as we are going to do a day trip. Bacon and eggs for breaky the first for the trip really nice to have something different for a change.
Headed off about 9:00am on the dirt roads again. We met a few vichels coming the other way today not much room to get off the road. A few speed humps on the way as they must want to slow down the traffic.

Ruby Gap was very spectacular and was worth the couple of hours drive in.

We then took a drive out to Glen Annie Gorge which was bit more of a challenges we had to drive over some rocks.

Ian amazing I got to do some driving and practice what you have taught me.

Back to Arltunga for a look around the ruins and look round the visitors centre.

Back to the station for tea which we were really late tonight.

11th Jervios - Old Ambalindum Homestead

Set off from Jervios at about 8:30am and guess what more corrugations to deal with actually 202ks to Gemtree now so it will be a long day.
Saw a few things on the way like a mountain named “eagal beak”. Decided to have a break about 11:30am as t corrugations were a bit hard to handle at times.

12:30pm arrived at Gemtree and had some lunch we were going to stay the night there but decided to move on as we wanted to get further down the track and we had enough time to do this.
On our way we traveled down the Binns track through some aboriginal land.
We arrived at Old Ambolindum Homestead at about 3:00pm which was really good, set up camp and had a look around the old homestead as my brother nows the manager and they made us feel really welcome.
That night we had a baked dinner which was a real success and Bob (manager and his wife Louis) came and ate with us which was really nice and I think they enjoyed the company.

9th Thursday Diamantina – Boulia

Set off on the Warracoota Circuit Drive at 8:30 as it is about 69.1k around to see everything.
1.Steel yards,

We have now finished after a few hours (11:00) so back to camp to hook up the trailers to head off to Boulia had a quick drink and something to eat before heading off. A lot if on coming traffic today as this national park must get a lot of visitors mainly coming from the west to south. Not a lot of animals or birds on this side of the national park.

Rocked into Boulia about 2:30pm set up camp and had some lunch did some washing then headed off into town to see some things.

We went and had a look at the min min show which was really good and it told us about the min min lights they see out here not photos where allowed to be taken in the show. Fiona I have your first tea towel from Boulia.
We had dinner at the pub tonight for a change. We had a good meal and was quite cheap. Spoke to a few other travelers doing the same thing.

8th Windorah – Diamatina National Park

Set of on our way 8:00am after Kim and Bryan filled up with ice for there esky. We walked around town and took some photos then we headed out of town travel further north
The country out of town was very green lots of birds and plenty of water we saw a (white necked heron).
We came across J.C. Ruins hotel of course we had to pull in and take some shots. The day was nice but a cold breeze blowing.

Along the way we came across these native wells and they were a hole in the ground full of water with rocks around the top.

Finally we came across Mt Henderson and found a sigh which pointed out the hole through it.

We decided to have a short break at 10:15am and we pick up some firewood for tonight. The country changed again and now there are a lot of sand dunes around.
There was a lot of cattle on the way and even two donkeys on the side of the road.
Now it is very sandy country and we are only about 50ks from Diamantina Lakes.

Oh no Bryan's got a squeak in his wheel so we have to stop and sort that out so we have to have some lunch while we are waiting to sort that out. Back on the road to find a place to stay for the night. Gum hole sounds the place for us.

We went and watch the sunset at Hunter's gorge and it was really nice while we were waiting we had a few drinks and some nibbles.
Sat around a fire for a short while had good nights sleep as it was really quite no noise around at all.

7th July Thargomindah-Windorah

Left Thargomindah 8:15pm we were only on the road for a short time and we came across a road train in the opposite direction.

We continued on until we got to Toompine an arrived there at 10:00am we stopped for a break and a look around the Toompine pub helped feed the baby lambs and goats out of beer bottles with teets. Saw a camel, goats. Dogs and lamas.

On the road again after half our break this road seems to have a lot of road kill on it of kangaroos, a lot of emus running all over the place. In some parts of this country it is very green and flat it start off being a very cool day.

We were almost to Quilpie and there was a sign to baldy top lookout so took a detour to see what it was like you could almost see across Qld.

Pulled into Quilpie what a quaint little town. Quilpie is “Home off the Boulder Opal” and “Colour of the Country.” and is located on the western sideof the Bulloo River. We had a walk around town check out some opal shops even though the boys were not impressed.

Kim and I walked up to the local Catholic church to look at the opal alter it was magnificent. We are now on our way to Windorah after a quick lunch break which is about 200ks so we will be there in good time.

We have come across a few road-trains out here so it is safer to slow down and move over and let them have the whole road as they are two big to argue with and they don't slow down very often. Just as we were coming into Windorah a police man was stopping everyone to check there license never had that experience before there is always a first I suppose.

They have a Solar Farm out here on the edge of town there are five sun mirrored dishes 13.7m across providing daytime electricity to the town. A first for Queensland. Cooper Creek runs near this town and there was a nice free camp site near there.

Bourke - Thargomindah 6/7/2009

Pulled out of Bourke about 8:15am drove north on the Hungerford Road (Dowling Track). Fords Bridge was about 60ks out on tar and dirt roads.

This is the Warrego Hotel built in 1913 is thought to be the only pub in Australia still standing constructed from mud bricks. Now heading to Yantabulla well if you blinked you would miss this little settlement as it consisted of 3 tin shakes. After a cup-a-tea break, back on the dirt for about 70ks to Hungerford which is on the NSW/QLD boarder.
You can't go past a small village and not call in for a beer and a walk around so that is what we did. Further up the road is Currawinya National Park stopped in and had our lunch and a quick look around a wool shed. This national park is where the billies are.

We are now heading to Thargomindah for the night. About 70ks out of Thargomindah we were driving along saw plenty of wildlife then all of a sudden this kangaroo come out of now where took a big slide straight under the car and trailer out the other side still hopping (they bread them tough out here) I think he will be a bit sore tonight. No damage thank god! except for leaving a bit of fur on our bumper-bar. Hey kids not sure weather those whistles on the front of the car worked today.

5th July has arrived, Where on our way

The day has arrived to get on our way. We woke at 4:00am to be out the door by 5:00. Andrew the oldest child was away up the coast, the two girls woke to say good-by and Tim opened one eye and grunted. We made it over the mountains with no trouble stopped in Lithgow for a quick toilet stop it was freezing so back in the car with great haste. They had a quick shower of rain before we got there and some dark clouds hanging about..We are now on our way to Mudgee for breakfast. Arrived in Dubbo at about 11:00 now we are heading to Nygan for a quick lunch break. Pulled into Bourke at around 4:30pm all set up by 5:00pm. I think tonight will be very cold.

UP! UP! UP!

We have had new shock and spring put on the car which has lifted it 2in so now I need a step ladder to get into it (just joking). The car actually feels a lot better than before and Paul thinks it handles better on the road. We will soon find out when we leave for the outback in 2 weeks time. We have put the basket on the roof for all the extras we will need to take. We have had our final meeting with the 4x4 wheel drive club on the Kimberley part of our trip. We are booking all the accommodation, flights and all other things need for the top end of Australia.

Tim tends to tease Basil so they have
a lot of sucking up to do with each other before Paul and I set off on the road.

When I do the shopping each fortnight I have to make sure I get extra things for the kids as they don't want to run out of food but unfortunately Basil things the kids rashen pack is for him, and he thinks he should get into them all the time.

You will see in the video clip how determined he is to get into the bag full of surprises for the kids I have packed away.

Eight Weeks to go

Time will go fast, we have our leave from work and the kids are getting used to the idea of being left here to look after Basil the dog. They would like me to stock up on the luxury items in the food department like chocolate biscuits and those sort of things before we leave as they have a budget to live on. I think they will be doing a lot of visiting at meal times to save a bit of money each week.

Driver training

Paul has completed his basic driver training, assessment driver training and now his advanced driver training through the 4x4 club so that is a big achievement. I have completed my basic and assessment 4x4 training so we are ready for almost anything we stumble across on our trip and hopefully we do not come up against anything to major. The Plenty might be interesting depending on who you talk to and the Old Ghan railway track could be exciting depending on the rain.

Bourke-Thargomindah-Windorah-Boulia-across the Plenty Hwy to Gem tree-Ruby Gap-Alice Springs-Kings Caynon-Ayres Rock-Down the Old Ghan Railway to Chambers Pillars-Lambert Centre-Old Andado-Dalhouse Springs-Painted Desert-William Creek-Woomera-Quorn, there we will be leaving our friends that we have been traveling with and having a week on our own so we will see the Eyre Peninsular.

From there we meet the 4x4 club in Alice on the 5th August and Kimberlies here we come.

On the 6th we continue on the next leg of our trip:
Depart Alice-up the Tanimi Road to Wolf Creek-Bungles Bungles-Halls Creek-Fitzroy Crossing-Derby-Up the Gibb River Road to Bell Gorge-Mornington Wilderness Camp-Mount Barnett road House-Drysdale Homestead leaving the camper there as it is not safe to take it to Mitchell Falls-Kalumburu we will pick the camper up again and continue to Ellenbrae Station-Elquestro-Wyndam-Kununurra-Lake Argyle-Daly Waters-Barklay Homestead-McKinaly-Longreach-Cunnamulla-Nygan then home to Sydney arriving on Saturday 5th Sept 2009.

Our Trip to the Outback

We will leave Sydney on the 5th July and start our trip of 2009 for 9 weeks. We have purchased a lovely new campertrailer and decked out the car, we have a 60 litre water tank behind the back seats and draw system in the back of the car with a fridge a awing on the back and side of the car, so the next thing is to work out how to pack all the recovery gear and all the other bits and pieces we need for 8 weeks on the road. Our camper will be the next thing to be organised and pack so we done take too much. We have done some small trips with the new camper and it is really nice and comfortable. The itinerary has nearly been finalised with all our stops for the nights worked out, and all so we don't miss out on anything along the way.
